ODK Collect is an Android application for collecting structured information where connectivity is unreliable. A configured form can request measurements, photographs, locations, barcodes, signatures and written observations. Form rules can constrain answers, skip irrelevant questions and repeat sections for multiple items. Workers download forms, fill them offline and submit completed records to a server. Latest project and updates
The latest Collect update verified by September 20, 2026 was v2026.3.4, released September 2. This available patch fixes disappearing choice images, choices hidden behind the keyboard and certain references used when connecting forms to external applications. The larger v2026.3 release, announced July 14, added existing map geometry as context when recording locations, routes or areas, plus image and video previews in the form contents view. Central v2026.3 was announced August 27. It improves CSV imports of existing records, lets administrators preview which records a field user can access, and adds one-question-per-page presentation in Web Forms. The practical opportunity is collecting the same useful evidence on every visit. Possible applications include:
- Property inspections: record the location, condition, measurements and photographs together, with additional questions when damage is reported.
- Equipment servicing: identify an asset and attach the current readings, work performed and unresolved issue to its continuing record.
- Landscaping or agricultural work: record boundaries or locations alongside observations, so the office can relate a finding to the correct area.

Picture this
Consider a fictional irrigation contractor with three technicians. Before leaving the office, each technician downloads the inspection form. At a site without reception, one records the site identifier, pressure reading, affected valve, photograph and whether another visit is needed.
Back online, the technician submits the record. The office checks that it arrived, reviews the photograph and assigns follow-up in its existing work system. A saved form on a phone is treated as pending until the office has received it. Where they are heading
ODK states that Central’s goal is straightforward installation, usability and extension through its APIs. The 2026 updates show continued attention to maps, persistent records and easier administration. Our interpretation is that ODK is becoming more useful for repeated field visits and connected reporting. That is an inference from shipped changes, not a promised business-management roadmap. Try the idea
Complete five visit records using the template first. Remove fields nobody uses, clarify ambiguous answers and decide who reviews exceptions. Then pilot one digital form with one technician: download it, complete it offline, reconnect and confirm that every record and attachment reaches the office.
When the product itself may fit
ODK merits consideration when repeatable field evidence and offline Android collection are central requirements. Our fit assessment: it is a poor choice if the immediate need is ready-made scheduling, invoicing or an iPhone-native crew application.
